Stacks and Inbetween
Teresa Getty & Camille Silverman
February 2020- ongoing project

The idea of the stacked project was a simple process that began as each mailed works back and forth every month. Dutifully working pages and surfaces with gestures, mark, color and what was thought were basic ideas of subtraction and addition.  Almost a month into process the coming of the Corona virus pandemic made the diary of stacks seem even more vital as individuals internationally began to work, like us, in an isolated fashion from their homes and studios.  Immediately, this distance, Camille in Chicago and Teresa in Seattle, began mimicking how everyone was working, trying to work together but at varying distances.  Figuring out how to manage a collaboration without being in close proximity.  Each stack was a bit of guesswork to how each artist was proceeding or interpreting their next moves.

The stacks were at first one sided and read like a book, then everything became double sided, then some moved towards sculpture.  Now again everything wiggles the work around and around as the artists consider the viewer and the ultimate site of installation.  The stacks continue to reshuffle into form and formlessness.  This morphing was there in the beginning and continues to define the work.  Continues to be transported and transported until it rests in a site and will reshuffle when transported from space to space.  Teresa began to call them our litter of puppies, forever mischievous and unruly.
